Day 68 Last Day!

Miles 65
This was tag sale day for Rhode Island. As we bike towards Providence on hwy 101 there were lots of bargains out in front of people's homes and lots of people pulling over onto the road shoulders to find them. We definitely had to stay alert. In Scituate as we approached hwy 116 north, cars were parking on the shoulder about a quarter of a mile from the intersection in all directions. There was a big arts and craft sale and it was a beautiful morning to enjoy it. In Providence, we rode around looking at Brown University and all the old architecture that make that city so nice and then took the Henderson Bridge over the Harbor. We had already pedaled 30 miles so we took a break at a local establishment called the Watchemoket Pub.

Day 67 Killingly, CT

After yesterdays disaster Neal and I were a bit leery of riding through downtown Springfield today and Neal mapped us out a back road route that led us down through West Springfield and over the Connecticut River. On the other side we found a nice bike trail which led us south to enjoy the sites along the river banks. This was obviously another area hard hid by recent flooding. The Connecticut River is about a quarter of a mile wide and the banks are steep, however there was accumulated mud and debris on the bike path in many places. We were 12 feet above the water.

Day 65 Avrill Park, NY

The wind helped us set a long distance goal today. It was mostly northwest and at least 10 knots all day with some bigger puffs. We pedaled through a lot of flooded country side. Hurricane Irene dumped a large amount of water on this area and then constant rain has caused many rivers to over flow. It was common to see household items in the woods or piled on the side of the road.
On the East side of Albany we crossed the Hudson river which was also swollen with muddy water. There were crews with heavy equipment cleaning our bike path, pushing mud into piles.

Day 66 Westfield, Massachusets

The day started with immediate hills. Within the first 5 minutes I had already stripped out of my jacket to let the sweat evaporate in the 40 degree temperature.
We found mostly hills on the way to Pittsfield, mostly up hills, and a few of them lasted for miles. It was beautiful country biking though and the leaves have begun to change color here.

Day 64 Springfield Center, NY

Miles 53
There was only light rain today and it ended early leaving us an overcast day of rolling hills and southerly breeze. It looked like it would rain any minute but actually cleared for a while to partly cloudy.
We went to Cooperstown for dinner. Cooperstown is at the south end of Lake Otsego, our campground was a KOA on the north end. Main street had lots of shops and restaurants on it but at 7:30pm they were mostly closed for the night. We found a nice Italian restaurant that was open and walked to the Baseball Hall of Fame afterwards, but it was closed too.
